There are lots of good acoustics questions in the Bible, especially in the New Testament. There are many scenes of lots of people hearing someone talk with no PA system. We can't seem to work it out sometimes even with microphones.
I think you might be right about people passing the message along. I have a picture that I will show tonight that shows Jesus in a boat right on the very edge of the shore. Perhaps it worked like that.
As for the question about why Jesus didn't explain the parable to everyone... I am going to give you a little homework. Compare Mark 4:12 to Isaiah 6:9. This won't answer your question, but it may give you more questions.
